Brick…To Paint Or Not

In general, I like an exposed brick wall. This is especially true when the brick has great character (old or new) and may appear weathered.

My NYC apartment living room fireplace wall is fully exposed brick. Without the brick, this space would feel even smaller and more narrow. The brick adds depth, richness, and history that can easily compliment any décor.

A painted brink wall can also have terrific depth and is a great option when the existing brick lacks an overall cohesiveness or it too heavy for the room. Painting brick is often ideal when the mortar has deteriorated and the wall is “shedding” sand.
